A Wardrobe Hero – How To Style a Graphic Tee

There is something about a graphic tee that makes my heart happy.  Is it comfort? Style? Timelessness? Edge? ✔✔✔and ✔. Really it’s all of the above! My whole life I have been drawn to the style and ease of tee shirts.  From the tee I picked up at my first concert as a teen (Journey), to all of the classics I stock in my store and wear on repeat (Bowie, The Who, Pink Floyd), to all the witty statement tees that speak my mind without saying a word (“Feminine Gangster”), to the coveted Logo tees which were popular back in the day and have seen a resurgence lately (Gucci).  I. Love. Them. All.

The thing I love the most?  They can be styled with anything.  No, really! I have worn them with jeans and a blazer, maxi and mini skirts, shorts and track pants, with leggings, under jumpsuits…the list goes on and on.   I have styled them with sneakers, heels, booties and flats for all different occasions. Somehow I always feel comfortable yet put together. It is all about having confidence, knowing your style and owning it.

There are any number of combinations that can take you from the work week to the weekend and everything in between.  The trick is to plan the rest of your outfit to the style and vibe of the shirt. Pair a simple graphic tee with a floral maxi skirt to keep it from feeling too girly.  Style a fitted tee under a favorite seasonal, full length dress to wear it year-round. Add a tee shirt under a polished suit set for a cool office look. If you have a whimsical statement skirt you are dying to wear, dress it down for daytime with a casual graphic tee.  Perfect the half-tuck with a relaxed tee and a favorite pair of denim trousers and heels. For a late-night look, tuck a graphic tee into a leather skirt and add statement heels.

The shoe choice, for me, is key and shouldn’t be overlooked.  A great pair of heels always dresses up an outfit and takes it to the next level. A sleek pair of booties adds a downtown vibe to a mini skirt and tee.  A cute pair of sneakers are more casual with a graphic tee and sleek skinnies. One of my all-time favorite looks – think Jane Birkin in a tight tee, vintage denim, basket bag and block heels – is as timeless and chic today as it was in the 60’s.

Play with it, have fun, and if all else fails, stop in a la mode and we can show you how it’s done!
